What is Visual Search?
Visual search uses images, rather than keywords, to find other images and information associated with them. Given an image query, the visual search software extracts visual features and searches through an index of images to
find those that are most similar to the query. Superfish has developed a general purpose, robust and scalable visual search system. The first implementation of the Superfish visual search is WindowShopper, which applies visual search to online shopping.

What is WindowShopper?
WindowShopper is an add-on to your browser that offers a fun and fast way to
discover fashion. When you click on the next to a product image, Window
Shopper pops up and displays visually similar products from hundreds of stores
(we are adding more all the time). From these choices, you can discover your kind of
fashion products by simply telling us what you like or don’t like about the style,
color or price of a particular product. It only takes one product to start on the road to discovery.

Who is Superfish?
Superfish is a young, privately held startup in Silicon Valley. We are technology enthusiasts and mathematicians who have been working for several years on visual search technology. Our vision is that visual search will one day allow people to use any picture at any time from any place as a search query. Our first offering enables fashion discovery by style on the web. We are backed by investors including venture fund Draper Fisher Jurvetson (DFJ) and its affiliate DFJ Tamir Fishman.

What can I window shop for with Superfish?
At this time we support fashion categories including apparel, footwear, jewelry, handbags and accessories. We will be adding more categories in the future. If you would like to see WindowShopper covering more categories, or if you think there are other applications for visual search, please share your thoughts with us in the feedback section.

How does WindowShopper work?
On our servers we maintain and constantly update a database of several million fashion products offered for sale on the Web at hundreds of stores. After adding WindowShopper to your browser, you will notice the Superfish [eye] next to product images. When you click on the eye, WindowShopper sends the product image to our visual search servers. These servers use fast algorithms and sophisticated mathematics to find the most similar products in our database. The search results are presented in the WindowShopper window, where you can further refine or expand your discovery process. If you find something you like and want to buy, a click takes you to the product page at the right store.

What information do you keep about me?
As you may have noticed (see our Privacy Policy), there’s no registration process to use WindowShopper. So we really don’t know who you are. We do track in aggregate what users look at so that we can improve our product.

Which stores do you work with?
Our servers index millions of apparel, footwear, jewelry and handbag products from hundreds of stores including top US online merchants, leading department stores and scores of specialty retailers. Scroll down at the Superfish homepage to see a list of the stores.

How long do you keep my favorites?
Your favorites (up to 25) are kept for as long as you keep your add-on. If you remove the add-on your favorites will be lost.

How do I remove WindowShopper?
If WindowShopper doesn’t work for you, you can remove or disable it easily:
Uninstall from Firefox:
1. Click Firefox button on the top left corner
2. Choose the Add-on option
3. Choose Extensions
4. Choose disable or remove for WindowShopper add-on.
Uninstall from IE
1. Click on the Start button.
2. Open the Control Panel.
3. Choose uninstall a program.
4. Find "WindowShopper".
5. Right click on "WindowShopper".
6. Click on the "Uninstall".

Why do I sometimes get products from a different category?
We search through millions of images by visual features. Sometimes, two products in different categories may share so many visual features that our algorithms think they are similar. (Likewise, if you type “Apple Jobs Cupertino” in a search engine you will get links to jobs at Apple and jobs picking apples in Cupertino, but perhaps no link in the first results page about Steve Jobs who is the CEO of Apple, Inc. in Cupertino).

What about global coverage?

How come WindowShopper doesn't work on a particular site?
At this time we support fashion categories including apparel, footwear, jewelry, handbags and accessories. We will be adding more categories in the future. Why does WindowShopper say it can't find any results for this product?
You may be selecting an image that is not a fashion product. If it is in a fashion category we support and WindowShopper still can't find any results, then the product you selected is not in our index. Please be patient with us through the beta test period and let us know the site and product where you encountered this error by emailing feedback@superfish.com.

On what platforms and browsers does WindowShopper work?
We currently support Firefox 3.5x for Windows XP, Vista, and 7 as well as for Mac OS 10.4+. We also support Internet Explorer 7 or 8 for Windows XP, Vista, and 7.
